Many of the ancient cultures of the world adhered to one or the other form of Shamanism. This is a tribal healing tradition where a Shaman is said to transcend the boundaries of the conscious world and travel to a world unbeknown to the ordinary man. Here, the Shaman converses with spirits and come back with secrets that allows him to heal others, foretell the future, control the weather and even ward off attacks.

The word ‘Saman’ is defined as a technique of ecstasy. A Shaman is a practitioner who is able to enter an altered state of consciousness where he can communicate with the supernatural. He acts as an intermediary between the world of man and the world of Gods and often has the power to descend to the realm of the dead. He leaves his body when he is in trance.

This trance is induced by chanting, beating of the drum or passionate dancing. In the more unsophisticated cultures, Shamans even used to take to fasting, ingesting psychotropic drugs or even undergo torture to achieve the trance.

As seen from the practices, Shamanism is based on the principle that the world is divided into 2 distinct parts – that visible to the ordinary man, and that visible only to the man with powers. In the second part, there is a miraculous world populated by the spirits who influence the world of the living and who are always willing to help. The Shaman acts as a link between the two worlds and works for the benefit of his society. Shamans are therefore experts employed by animistic societies.

Healing is the most important function of the Shaman followed by prophecy. Shamanism, in the larger sense of the word, is thus perhaps the oldest form of healing. It is a form of religious medicine that originated more than 25,000 years ago. The healing practices of most of the ancient cultures stem from a shamanic tradition.

The Shaman is often credited with magical healing powers and is crowned as the religious or spiritual head of a tribe. He is called upon to treat the sick and to drive away demons. It is important to remember that in most ancient cultures, sickness was considered to be the result of demoniac forces acting on the individual. The difference between the ordinary man and the Shaman is that while the man is possessed by spirits, the Shaman controls the spirits.

All this may lead one to believe that Shamanism is an occult practice that is buried in the past and that it has no significance to the modern man. But Shamanism is still practiced all over the world, although it has evolved into different forms. Native Americans are said to perform Soul Flights to heal. In Tibet, the Shamans use a drum to help them in soul retrieval. In Kerala, India Shamans are closely tied to the temple and use amulets and music to contact the spirits of the nether world. Shamans in Africa often use hallucinogenic plans to induce trance.

Shamanism has found a place in modern day healing because of the importance it places on the soul, mind and spirit. Shamanic healing includes relief from pain, anxiety, stress and emotional healing. It is believed that there is an inner Shaman in everyone – a force that can be released if one is able o concentrate hard enough. Unleashing the power of this inner Shaman will help cure maladies that afflict us.

With one, we can relate. with one,we can be totally comforatble. With one, we can be ourselves. And with one, we can share our deepest emotions. All our fears, our aspirations, our problems, and our dreams. A friend is one, who can be counted for support at all the times. who is there for us, whenever we need him/her. Who will never laugh at us, but will laugh with us. How many of us have such a friend?

Very few. Isn’t it? But we all need friends. We want to have someone who can be relied upon. we want someone, with who we can communicate. we want someone, who is always for us. Who gives us the right guidance at all the times. And on whose advise, we can act. Don’t we all need such a friend? Many of the married couples want desperately to develop such confidence and reliance on each other. But many fail.

Who is left, but God? Whether, you are a spiritual person or not, you can always turn to God. You may deny God, but God does not do that. God never goes away from you,because you are one of his creations.

Turn to God, whenever you need a friend. Tell him all that is bothering you. talk to him sitting alone on a sea shore or in agarrden. Talk to him, about your day when you go to sleep. And ask him for guidance, before beginning your day.

Talk to him, before attempting anything. Tell him what you want to do and ask for help. He will help. He will always be there for you and with you. He will guide you at all the times. Never forget that a small seed grows into a big tree, but the early growth that occurs in the womb of the soil is never seen by us.

God takes care of everything at all the times. Why would He not take our care? Make friends with God. Make Him your best friend.

CBT stands for ‘Cognitive Behavioral Therapy’ and is essentially a set of tools used for psychotherapeutic interventions when treating anxiety disorders and other psychological conditions. This also happens to be the preferred method of therapy among most health institutions today.

The best bit? As well as being highly effective and proven in countless studies, CBT is also very simple to teach and can even be explained ‘remotely’. Here we will take a look at what CBT entails, why it’s so powerful and why it’s very much worth learning.

How CBT Works
CBT is essentially the natural evolution from behaviorism. Behaviorism is a school of psychology that views all of our behaviors and beliefs as being learned responses that have been trained via conditioning. Behaviors that have been rewarded become reinforced and we perform them more often. Behaviors that have been punished become less common.

CBT takes this principle and adds an additional cognitive element – showing that we can actually reinforce a behaviour through the way we think. If we have anxious thoughts about an action for instance, then we can find ourselves actually enforcing that association to the point of even developing a phobia. We don’t actually have to experience anything bad – our belief and predictions alone are enough to create the association!

The same can also work in reverse though and if you logically break down your fears, explain to yourself why you shouldn’t be afraid of them then eventually you can completely remove those phobias.

An Example So how might this work?
A good example is a social phobia, which can be created through the maladaptive belief that you’re going to embarrass yourself, that you’re going to faint or that perhaps you’re in some kind of danger. It is your job then to remove this association through CBT using techniques such as ‘thought challenge’. Thought challenging involves assessing just how realistic a fear is in a logical way and often you’ll be able to disprove your own fears to yourself.

You can then formulate these new thoughts as positive affirmations and actually talk yourself up before big events. Eventually, this can be enough to complete remove the phobia or anxiety – and it’s something that anyone can practice alone at home!

Exercise #3 Ð Identify Three Things you Appreciate About Yourself
With our constant need to compare ourselves to others, this one can be a challenge. Take some time to think about the things that you appreciate about yourself. It could involve your personality, your daily actions, your qualities, or anything else that is directly related to yourself.

Exercise #4 Ð Identify Three Things You Feel Grateful For Right Now
To cultivate gratitude, it is essential to be in the here-and-now. Take the time to think about what you can appreciate about your current situation. Think about the time you’re taking for your health, think about the environment, think about anything that relates to the present moment.

Exercise #5 Ð Identify Three People Who are Significant in Your Life
Think about all the people youÕve had in your life. These can be coaches, teachers, mentors, family members, friends. Call those people to mind and take the time to think about how they made a difference in your life.

Exercise #6 Ð Create Thank You Notes
Create thank you notes for those three individuals that made an impact on our lives. You don’t have to send them, just the act of writing down your gratitude will be beneficial.
Practicing these six exercises regularly will help you to cultivate gratitude and lead you to a healthier and happier life.
