Almost all of us have had this moment:
You react strongly…
and later think, “Why did I even react like that?”
It feels automatic. Almost like you had no control.
But there is a pattern behind it.
What actually happens inside us
Every reaction follows a simple flow:
Something happens → you interpret it → you feel something → you react
But because this happens very fast, it feels like a direct reaction.
Let’s take a simple situation
Someone doesn’t reply to your message.
Now what can happen internally:
- “They are ignoring me”
- “They don’t respect me”
These thoughts create emotion — maybe irritation or anger.
And then comes the reaction.
The important thing to understand
The situation is not the real problem.
The meaning you give to it is what drives your reaction.
Two people can face the same situation and react completely differently.
Why?
Because their interpretation is different.
So how do we change this?
Not by suppressing emotions.
That never works for long.
The only practical way is to create a small pause.
Even a few seconds.
A very simple technique
Next time something triggers you:
Just stop for a moment.
Take one slow breath.
And ask yourself:
“What exactly am I thinking right now?”
This one question creates awareness.
And awareness reduces intensity.
One thing worth remembering
You may not control what happens around you.
But with awareness, you slowly start gaining control over how you respond.
And that changes your entire experience of life.
